The point system as employed in Panzer Campaigns system would certainly change the game, and might restore balance to the ACW single phase system because it takes most of a unit's point allotment to melee. Thus a unit would have to begin its turn in close proximity to a battery if the unit planned t... |

Whoops! Misread the request. I checked to see if I still have 1.01a, but
I don't.

In response to a request for new scenarios for Tillercon, I designed four; two for a hypothetical rear guard action near Fairfield during the retreat and two for the Union cavalry attacks at Williamsport and Hagerstown. A fair amount of research went into these scenarios, which range from 17 to 25 t... |

Hi, Not much, imho, except in the woods. Then you can see question marks for units two hexes out, so you can detect ambushes and hidden battle lines. It can also delay an enemy attack by forcing it to expend an extra movement point which it doesn't have. In the open, deploying skirmishers is actuall... |

At Tillercon I had the opportunity to check out the Panzer Campaigns system that HPS produces and found features that I thought might be applicable to ACW. One of these is an operation point concept where moving or firing uses up points. You can usually fire up to three times, move and fire, fire an... |

With all respect to Gen Pierre D., I agree with Col White on simultaneous preplotted turns. If nothing else, it erases such anomalies as the side that goes first gets shot at dusk and routs away at night. But Gen D is right in that properly implementing preplotted simultaneous turns would require a ... |

Hi, Rich, One old Civil War joke was the one about General Pope, who, when brought east after capturing Island #10, told the eastern troops that in the West, they were used to seeing the backs of their enemies and that henceforth his headquarters would be in the saddle. Which led the troops to comme... |

In spite of the tourist traps, I think Gettysburg is still my favorite battlefield, and with a monument to each Union regiment/battery that participated. Rather than mention a park that needs restoration, how about some more parks? I tried to find the Valverde battlefield one time but all I could fi... |

I think General Whitehead's solution is on the mark. Seems in some game or another cavalry was allowed to retreat before melee, but that may have been a board game. Results would be the same, except cavalry could elect to stay and be meleed. I have to say, though, I can't recall any account of such ... |

The best and most challenging opponent I have played is General Kelly
Ross. We have played regularly for over five years, and I have learned much from him.

Anybody ever heard of a Texas general named Stovepipe Johnson? He got his nickname by running Yankees out of town with a stovepipe mounted on wagon wheels. He was blinded in a raid in Kentucky but went on to found Marble Falls, Texas, after the war. For the Yankees, I always thought A J Smith was un... |

In one of the larger campaign scenarios, the replay is taking close to
half an hour. But you hate to skip the replay and miss potentially
important information. Anything John can do to streamline the process
would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, General, Here is a guess. If a section has two guns, it has fifty men. Say you shoot at the section at point blank range and get forty men. You have an 80% chance of killing the crew. If it is a 6-gun battery your chances are less than 25%. That is only a guess based on what I read in Combat Res... |

Indications in "Plowshares into Swords" indicates that Gorgas tried to keep a level of 140 rds/infantryman in each army. The US ordnance manual stipulated a level of 200 rds/man. The trick then becomes how to figure how much ammo was expended per man in each fire phase. Probably more on defense than... |
