While we're talking about the Automatic Defensive Fire program, I'd like to try to identify <i>all</i> of the "triggering" situations that induce a check for "opportunity fire." As I understand it these events serve only as a possible check for "opportunity fire" and do not in and of themselves auto...

I might as well continue blowing off some more steam, since I've opened my vents already...but I'll do it in the form of a question, which I hope doesn't paint me as too much of a whiner. Does anybody else out there feel that the values in HPS for the <b>Quality Fire </b>and <b>Quality Melee Modifie...

Gentlemen, I thank you for your comments, one and all. I believe that what this comes down to <i>for the moment </i>is individual choice. Whether turn-based or phase-based the player who cares about realism in his simulations has a lot of things to juggle. I do appreciate the fluid nature of the tur...

Jim, The 14 guns I was talking about were in reference to a posting, <font color="pink"><b><i>Full Melee Defensive Fire in new system</i></b></font id="pink">, (Aug. 10th) made by General Laub. The situation he described was not specifically appropriate to my comments, but obviously had a direct bea...

I thank you for your comments, General Collins. Perhaps I should expand my experience by giving the "Phased Play," MDF ON - ADF ON option you describe a trial run. I think I would be satisfied if the HPS games played as the BG games do, although I still feel that HPS could and should give their ADF ...

<font color="pink"><b><i>"If you want to go back to fully manual play you are going to have a hard time finding an opponent."</i></b></font id="pink"> That's the rub, isn't it?! Most players <i>would/do </i>play with as few file exchanges as possible; so most players are forced to deal with the ADF ...

OK! I'm finally biting the bullet. I refuse to play another HPS contest with the ADF option "ON." I refuse to sacrifice what I feel is both my studied and common sense knowledge of Civil War field tactics and combat realism to a spurious game code. Like many another newer player I was lulled into th...

General Collins,

I should very much like to take on a Gettysburg Campaign with you, utilizing phased play.

If what you've described is true, something <i>does</i> seem completely out of whack! One would expect in that situation that the assaulting cavalry not only would receive around 100+ casualties but that the charge could very well have been disrupted! Col. Jos. C. Meyer, 4th "California" Brigade, "C...

Absolutely great stuff, Ken! For those of us who like to explore the inner workings of the game, this is the place to go. It ought to be considered as part of the recommended, post-graduate training regime for each military academy. Frankly what you've done here is raised the available level of game...

Oh, that's just great, Jim! You've let the cat out of the bag and now HPS will have to go and fix it. Didn't you see the UA Special General Order forbidding Union officers from openly discussing this?!! For crying out loud! Col. Jos. C. Meyer, 4th "California" Brg'd, Cav. General Simms's comment concerning the extra burden placed upon the instructors at the Training Academies may warrant some additional thought. I would assume that those who have been instructors and those who now serve now in such capacity would have the best insights regarding it. Col. Jos. C. Meye...

Thank you, Kennon, for explaining to me the subtle differences for ADF involved in "Turn" and "Phased" mode play. It will force me to more closely examine all of the issues of both modes. In the meantime let me ask if there is possibly room for consideration of reducing the penalty to ADF in the "Tu...
