A topic of interest to me as well. Although I'm "in between training" right now. My sons are in their 30's; my oldest grandson is 3. I think the Battleground games are a better place to start. The scenarios are more tactical and you get to the action quicker. I also think there is a larger number of...

Always a fun topic to comment on. I'm not a fan of house rules in email games --- unforseen details seem to frequently impact conformance to the agreement. In terms of evaluating any idea, I think there are three considerations. Is it practical - is it easy to understand, can it be explained, is the...

Personnally I think it is okay to look at a scenario, before you play. The point has been made a number of times that if either opponent has previously played the scenario, they already have a lot of intelligence. Playing against someone who has previously played a scenario and not looking, may be n...

When my son was about that age, we also took a copy of a Gettysburg game map with us and used it to walk the battlefield -- using it to match up the terrain to the map hexes as well as the location of the troops which he knew about from playing the game. If you want to do some walking the boy scouts...

I think you will also find, if the unit took fire on the flank, even if there was no casualty, the odds get close to that 3.8% number -- which is not quite as unlucky as being on the wrong end of a 1.3% probability, but still pretty uncommon. In these games, I think you need objective to force the action. In general I think objectives ought to be worth enough to give one side a minor victory. I am also not a fan of objectives with large values -- I prefer to see more, smaller valued ones in a scenario. An exception could be a truly impor...

..and I was planning to take one of those dusty old uniforms out of the trunk for that Brigade Command so that I won't make such a good target in the front line and now I got this shinny new medal on it. Oh well, better show them the profile! Thanks. Lt Gen Bob Breen Commanding 5th Bde, 1st Div, XIX...

I think there are two separate topics here. I'll put my two cents in for both. With regard to Tournament Oversight, Motivation, Recognition, or what ever you want to call it, I think the club would be well served to have someone (some group) which serves as a point of contact for any one who wants t...

Before the South writes off New Jersey, remember that prior to the War, a number of those fine Southern boys would routinely attend Princeton (I guess a few still do!) and if it was up to the Newark textile manufacturers New Jersey might have been in the Southern column when it came to picking sides...

I'm not voting one way or the other on longer vs smaller scenarios, just some observations about the "analysis". If you play a lot of smaller scenarios you are likley to have a mix of results. I suspect even the best players don't win more then about 70% of their games. So you need to consider that ...

My inputs are more from the perspective of what makes a good game that is roughly historical, but not necessarily a perfect historical recreation. Even with FOW, having our comamnd platform in the sky view of the entire battlefield provides a lot of information that changes the nature of how we figh...

I think there are a couple of considerations both from the perspective of the firing units and the targets. In addtion to causing casualties on the target you want to increase the odds that the unit will rout/disrupt from a subsequent morale check. If can get a unit to rout then other units may have...

I'm not sure "more is better" in these games. I think you have to look at results over a period of turns, and in a sense a unit that stays disrupted for a number of turns was "at a higher level" then a unit that recovers after one -- my experience is that artillery, if not in the front line will rec...
