I suspect that a better LOS system could easily be introduced. The "?" display for units spotted by certain types of units already exsists. It just needs to be expanded and ranges of LOS introduced. As to cavalry squadrons being able to melee or not. You are correct that these small formations would...

Since playing Turn Based (Single Phase) seems to keep coming up in spite of it being a piece of s***[:D], I thought I would start a thread on how to fix it so it is at least tollerable. First, its good points: It allows multiplayer games without a lot of extra emails, it introduces opportunity fire ...

I think cavalry breakdown into squadrons is one of those things that could unhinge the game system unless combined with systematic changes throughout the game. The ability to saturate the map with small squads of cavalry will create problems. It will make the godlike overview of the map even more so...

1. Artillery Ammo Fix - one ammo point per gun. 2. Artillery Melee Fix - retreat(limber and move) from melee after losses. 3. Infantry Column Melee Fix - Make it unnecessary (alternate means for taking bridges/towns or severly restrict to use on bridges and town hexes. BG. Kennon Whitehead Chatham G...

My personal vote[:)] for fixing the artillery with I think minimum altering of the game engine is: 1. Handle artillery ammo like small arms ammo resupply. One strength point (gun) uses one ammo. 2. Handle melees with artillery like you now do with already limbered guns. The calculated men lost is di...

Problem is with the one size fits all. Yes 700 men routing through 100 green troops would disrupt them but no 20 men routing through the Iron brigade would hardly produce anything but laughter from the "Black Hats". And as Lynn pointed out artillery is not easily disrupted by retreating units. As to...

Ohhhh, Gen. Simms needs tactical advice, no problem.[^] General the best way to attack a fortified line is to move your troops adjacent by backing into the hexes. This allows your troops to know which way to run so they won't get confused. Artillery should be handled just like the game AI does, atta...

"What I object to is having to cross a linear obstacle (bridge, defile, exitng the woods by road) and losing 3/4 of your turn because you can't then ploy into line." True but no real cure as long as the game engine reduces things down to a simplistic you are in line or road column choice. Using Turn...

I haven't played the HPS Napoleonics enough to be certain but I suspect there are two reason for Turn based working for Nappy games and not ACW. The troops are armed with muskets that only have a two hex range so most Auto Defense Fire will occur and close range. And Napoleonic artillery is more eff...
