One of the best books I've read is April 1865 by Jay Winik. He puts forth that the man who saved the Union was not Lincoln but rather Lee. Of course Lee was revered almost as a god in the south. When the end became obvious, Davis and others had urged him to have the ANV to break up into small groups... |

The old boardgame series Great Battles of the ACW modeled this a little bit with the Brigade Combat Effectiveness (BCE) rule. As losses where taken by a whole brigade the morale of all units in the brigade begin to drop. A "B" quality held in reserve might become "D" quality if t... |

Maternal GGrandfather, Homer Mead. A drummer boy in the 8th Iowa Cavalry. Wrote a self published book all about his adventures. While from Illinois he actually ran away from home to "be part of the adventure" as he said. Homer was interesting. He became a country doctor on the plains of Il... |

I frequent Jenny's page (Draw the Sword, No. 10) every few weeks. She shares two other interests I have, photography, which I haven't done a whole lot of lately and running, which I do almost everyday. She is a very gifted photographer and her civil war photofgraphs are posted here: http://www.photo... |

The dwindling subject matter aside, I think the system is getting a tad stale. Probably what would help most is a review of the engine with an eye towards incorporating a "wego" turn similair to the Johnny Reb miniatures system or the old World at War games. There would still be the board game flavo... |

Yes, I remember Roger when he was commander of the 4th division, I Corps USA (we had no armies then). And then I remember when he was given command of the new IV corps (still no armies) where I had commmand of his 4th division. Time frame-1997-1998. Welcome back Roger. Gen. Probably the best Civil War talk I attended was a tour of the salient. My wife and I were just out taking a drive (we lived in Middleburg, Virginia at the time) and just stopped in. Not preplanned or anything. A guy was there, said he was a volunteer and would be starting a 30 minute tour in the nex... |

Great discussion guys. Upon reading Marks "heads up" regarding the EBay deals with ACW, I went ahead and pick it up for $8 (well ok, $11 with shipping). Thanks Mark. Col. Steve Johnson, a club member whom I actually see face to face two or three time a year and talk to almost weekly, also picked up ... |

1. Generally, do you play in 2D or 3D? 2D 2. What's the longest battle you've fought, in turns? Ken's last moderated game. Whatever 3 days works out to be. 3. Do you play in single phase, or multi-phases? Answer as a percentage for each. Single 4. How many ACW games do you usually have going at once... |

Only the unit in the hex with breastworks receives a benifit. Picture 125 yard wide hexes while picturing the Sunken Road (a ready made breastwork) at Fredericksburg. The CSA was right up next to the stone wall while the USA advanced to maybe within 30-40 yards. For both to benifit the range would h... |

The question of having the attackers rout is a fair one and would certainly be a step in the right direction toward a more realistic gaming model. But, as usual this needs to be looked at in context of the game as very little here happens in a vacuum. The current set up with only the defender routin... |

I like Ross's suggestion regarding disrupted units too. Sometimes this has been incorporated into games as a house rule. Another house rule occasionally used is that of half movement for units/commands beyond the command radius of their leaders. Gen. Doug Burke Other hobby: Running 30-40 miles per w... |
