If you want a rather different view of why Lee did what he did I recommend reading "Lee's Real Plan at Gettysburg" by Troy D. Harman. It has been a while since I read it but I will try to summarize it. Harman's premise is that Lee recognized Cemetery Hill as the key to the battlefield and his attack... |

I think the legal question is whether a state had the right or not to succeed from the Union. If it did then the US should evacuate its territory including Fort Sumter within their borders which it was. If they didn't have the right to succeed then the CSA's seizing of US property was sufficient rea... |

Pass on some thoughts[^] on some of the points brought up: Modifying CG for solitare play allows a lot of things that you cna't attempt to do in email because of time or informal rules. <font color="blue">"One thing that I have always thought would be an interesting optional rule, is that once battl... |

Going to 10 minute turns solves some problems but introduces new ones. One of which is that by email it would take 312 turns or two years, assuming you could get a 3 turns a week turned around, to finish Gettysburg. This is the major problem with any of the proposed shorter turn ideas. The 20 minute... |

Looking for a opponent for HPS Campaign Gettysburg and Battle of Gettysburg. Wouldn't mind a mirror match on these since I would like to take a look how the Yankee side is too. Prefer playing with all options on. Like to have opponent that can turn around 2-3 turns a week expecially on the Campaign ... |

Five minute turns in email game pretty much limits you to small tactical engagements. It would take you years to play full battles like Gettysburg.

I have been thinking somewhat along these lines. That is, using a 20 minute time interval. This gives a good balance between micromanaging the battle and having so little control you just as well not give orders. Allowing the player to plot a move and give the regiment/brigade and order to carry out... |

I have tinkered with the idea but plot and simultaneous movement does have its problems. First, for the player it can become really difficult to keep track of what you have or haven't done. This becomes more of a problem as the unit density goes up. A few squads in Combat Mission can be managed, but... |

I agree, everything I have found in analyzing the problem indicates that the fire value are correct for ranged fire and the VP value is correct for the relative value of artillery. I think it will be difficult to get a concensus for modifying the pdt value to compensate for a melee problem. The fix ... |

Okay here are some numbers. I based this off Corinth 1.01a since it reports factors used in combat so I could check my calculations. I used phased system. Due to how the AI works and halving of fire in Turn based (opportunity fire) I would expect it to produce worse results (probably about half the ... |

Judging from you post you are refering to the ADF under Turn Based (Opportunity Fire) system. It's so broke that nothing can fix it short of an entire rewrite of system. Because you can keep trying until you succeed, or run out of adjacent hexes, there is no way for a battery under Turn Based to def... |

Going to 0 VP would lead to excesses in the opposite direction just as bad as problems created by the high VP. I could see artillery being used as a skirmish line to break up attacks, cost nothing why not. What else are those 1 gun sections good for?[:D] Back some time ago I made a calculation based... |

Generally all the historical data I have found favors HPS's interpretation of the effectiveness of artillery. If anything they are still on the high side. However, there is a definite morale side to troops charging artillery has reflected by the number of charges against the 11th OH without taking t... |
