Chickamauga and Antietam come to mind. Folks usually shy away from Shiloh, but I think it would be very interesting with the right command arrangement.

Lots of interesting points here. 70 hexes is exactly five miles in the game scale, and I agree it is an unrealistic distance for getting consistent sightings of the enemy, but there are instances of units being sighted at such distance. The outpost on Clark's Mtn, at the beginning of Overland, not o...

If I recall correctly, the Mex Am War game used a different facing. Having two frontal, two flank, and two rear hexes makes a lot of sense, but boy did I get the "hee haw" when I suggested it for ACW! Going one step further, the Age of Rifles game uses eight facings. three front, two flank...

Lots of chatter since my last post. The only thing I'll say is, regarding Steve's post, 100 men wide and 100 men deep would be ten THOUSAND men. Try THAT in yer pdt, Robert!

Never had much use for muskets and pikes. Didn't say I don't know how to use them. You lost me, Steve. Please elaborate.

Once again, we go from discussing what we as players and designers can do to control supply situations to proposing engine changes, such as explicit artillery supply, which is way beyond our pay grades. As a designer, if I don't think the supply wagons carry enough, I simply add more wagons. One of ...

"...and miles to go before I sleep...." I understand Bob wrote that. Sometimes a modification is a necessary thing. In Chickamauga, the published version of the two day battle has two Union brigades coming on at the wrong location, where they have no chance of influencing the situation. I ...

I would commend Ken Miller's ammo supply system as interesting reading for all. I used it in Overland, especially in the monsters. I believe it is in his engineering site. If you don't see it, I might be able to resurrect it from Overland notes or maybe Ken could post it. John Ferry Overland designer

Speaking of highly rated units and fatigue, the story of the Iron Brigade, experiencing some of the highest percentage losses on July 1 and then pulling themselves up by the bootstraps to defend Culp's Hill, indicates that morale really should be a factor in recovery. I don't think Ed Johnson's divi...

Fatigue recovery is especially problematic in any of Overland's longer scenarios. It just seems to take units (especially Union) a long time to recover. And I'm using the optional faster rate. Are there any tips out there on how to expedite recovery, regarding leaders, location, supply, any other fa...

This post would be equally applicable to Ken's post about a new game. It is said that an elephant is a pony designed by a committee. In other words the pony becomes too big and complicated when input exceeds what is required. I think these games succeed because they are simple representations of com...

We will probably find ourselves using different terminology for various things, such as unit and leader ratings, just to not appear to be replicating what is featured in our HPS games. What suggestions are out there for what would go into the make up of a unit (regiment or battery) or rating a leade...

I would be very interested in participating. There were some folks on the old Age of Rifles forum who aspired to build a new product, because Norm Koger was not interested in improving the game or communicating with players. Imagine that. A few of them were very knowledgeable, and would be valuable ...
