There are three versions of the Battle of Champion Hill with both a hugely expanded map and additional CSA forces, which need some comment. An otherwise capable CSA commander has only to fall back from the namesake hill and construct a very potent defense along Baker Creek, which effectively slices the battlefield nearly in half from northeast to southwest. There are three crossings: Jackson Road, Raymond Road and Mann's Bridge. Before it empties into the Big Black River, far to the southwest, there are three other crossings that would demand a a time-consuming, very wide, southern swing by a sizeable portion of the Federal forces. But by holding the three upper crossings in force the CSA commander may tightly control the battle and present a nearly impossible barrier to any Union success. The scenario ought to be more nearly labeled, Baker Creek!

I agree Joe! I have taken to altering the scenarios and creating a more interesting and provocative battle. I created one scenario I titled "Grant must flank", but instituted a house rule that the Rebel army could not move any further East than Edwards Depot. This forces the Rebel player to maneuver and fight. I also added both Walker's and Breckenridge's Divisions as reinforcements. The result when I played Ed Lytwak was a very interesting fight with lots of maneuver and cat/mouse until things built to a large and bloody conclusion. I find that without these changes it always ends up a river crossing battle only. Also my changes actually give the Rebel army a chance to win in an open fight despite the absence of good and plentiful cavalry. The Vicksburg scenarios though true to history for the most part offer little for the players who want a battle of maneuver and surprise. However, it is a good campaign with a little work while keeping an eye on historical accuracy.

Gents, I looked over the Vicksburg Campaign and tried to find the battle/siege of Port Hudson. Wonder why that was left out too?

The siege was longer than Vicksburg and the Rebels had a great entrenched position ( 4 to 1) force ratio.

Would love to see that scenario created/added to the campaign.
