Post subject:  Campaigns and Casualties - CLOSED

As a new person to the ACWGC and the JTS Campaign series I would like to know more about the 'campaign' in each of the games.

In the campaign you fight a series of battles and units in early battles often reappear in subsequent ones. My questions on this are:
1. Do the losses a unit suffers (or a part thereof) in a battle carry-over to subsequent battles that unit appears in?
2. Does any artillery captured by one side get added to that side's OOB?
3. If yes, to either of the above, is this explained anywhere (as I can not find it)?

[To me, the answer to 1. and 2. should be yes as this would be the more realistic outcome and also discourage any mad 'do or die' mass attacks at the end of a battle as a commander would not want to callously sacrifice units that they may need for a future battle. However, I suspect that the answer will be no as it does not seem to be mentioned anywhere in the manuals I've seen.]

I think this was covered in a thread in the MDT, before, but I could not find it

Perhaps an email to JTS support would be the best way to get a definitive answer.

Thanks for your advice. I have sent the same question to JTS Support. I will post their response when I receive it.

Anyone have any idea how long it takes for JTS to respond to such questions?
[It's now two weeks since I sent the query to them via their own website - I've also been checking my email spam folder just in case but it hasn't appeared there either.]

Each of the JTS/HPS game packages very definitely contain complete campaign pathways, some even two or three different routes! Once begun, you will see casualties impacting upon the subsequent battle(s), for both unit strength and leader losses. I have not seen any incorporation of captured artillery in subsequent battles, although I am nearly 95% certain that your own batteries will not be rebuilt. In many cases the time between battles seems not to permit this, which may or may not be reflective of the actual histories.

I had sent it using the message system on the Support part of their website.

I've now sent it again but this time from my email account to the address you supplied above.

Ah, that did the trick, got a very quick response. [Note for future: do not use website message portals and email direct in future.]

Here's the reply, bold and underline emphasis is mine.

"Hi Paul,

A lot depends on the campaign and how it is designed. Generally speaking losses will carry over between battles - and if the next battle is within a day or two fatigue can even carry over. Gun captures are not added to the OOB however. Some campaigns are simply a series of historical battles, but not with losses carrying over, as they might just be an "overview" of battles played during a campaign, but not with necessarily the same forces. Campaign 1776 has this, but none of the CWB titles jump to mind with it. This will be noted in the beginning description of the campaign if it applies.

And yes, these answers apply to all games in the Civil War Battles, Napoleonic Battles, Early American Wars & Musket & Pike series of games.

Regards,
Rich"
