Can anyone tell me if spiked artillery in the HPS games retain their ability to spot enemy units? Are not spiked guns, no matter who does the spiking, to be considered essentially abandoned? Lt. Jos. C. Meyer, 4th Brg'd, Cav. Div., 14th Corps, Army of the Cumberland |

I'd like to make an update on this spiked gun thing, which I've been watching very closely in my subsequent games. It is true that a spiked artillery unit by itself will not provide the original, owning player with any spotting capability; except in one case! That case is when any opponent's unit moves through or occupies the spiked artillery unit's hex. So you'd say, "OK, no big deal!" right? I think that would depend upon the exact details of the occurrance. In any event, it shouldn't happen. Or should it? Lt. Jos. C. Meyer, 4th Brg'd, Cav. Div., 14th Corps, Army of the Cumberland |

Ernie, While playing under FOG the enemy captures your guns on a road in the woods then spikes them. You can not "see" those guns as long as an enemy unit is on them (they are marked captured), if the guns are abandoned they then become visible to you the following turn, if the enemy should move units down the road, then during the replay you can see each enemy unit pass over the spiked guns. The guns in effect become an unmanned spotter to an area you do not have LOS to. This and the ability of captured guns to fire without having to man them are a couple of perks[8] that came with artillery capture. (I think HPS is working on the latter)
Maj.Gen. I have found that leaving a small un useable unit on the captured arty unit combats this problem. The other problem I have with captured arty is that when you remove a unit from the hex with the arty unit you lose the points for the captured arty. Not sure if the opponent gets those points back, but captured is captured. You should keep the points until the enemy re-captures the guns. Just my two cents. Gun capture is optional. I no longer will play with this option. 1. you capture and spike guns-get the points 2. Your opponent recaptures the guns-you lose the points. Okay -right? Seems fair enough but in effect it just gives the game to whomever is the last to hold the field. Thus, one might have made a fine attack taking the ground and the enemy guns and then you make a nice delaying retreat but your superior forced opponent retakes the field. Not only does he get the objective points but you lose the gun capture points-a double whammy. The only alternitive is to move your guns up and blast them into oblivion at point blank range so the points are permenant-does htis make any reality sense? I know I have not explained this well but I hope y`all can see my point.[:p] Colonel Tony Best Army of Georgia |
