Your reasons for preferring multi-phase play match mine quite closely. The defensive fire of single-phase is far too illogical.

For the record, playing in multi-phase does not increase the number of emails required for PBEM single-player games, only multi-player.

There is just way too much defensive fire. I like the concept of melee after fire and movement but every time you add a regiment to the melee you get creamed. Sorry guys but its not my cup of tea and the Multiphase format (Manual Defense Phase with ADF enabled) will continue to be my favored mode of play.

Hi, Bill,

Your complaint actually seems to be the direct opposite of mine, which is that defensive fire in single turn is too anemic. You can minimize opportunity fire by moving and firing in stacks. This applies to melees also; drag and drop the stack. The problem the Reb has at 1st Manassas is that more Yank units have rifles and rifled artillery, so they should enjoy the benefits of op fire more than the Rebs. Yet that is a realistic problem, and the reason muskets were abandoned in favor of rifles by almost all units as the war progressed. Anyway, we share the same conclusion, even though we reach it for opposite reasons.
