Gentlemen,

I will be away from my HQ this coming Thursday, June 2nd to Sunday the 5th.

I’ll be walking the fields of Gettysburg all day Friday and along with other members of the “Friends of Gettysburg” will be building fences somewhere on the field on Saturday.

Anyone wanting to meet up on Friday drop me a line and we can exchange cellphone numbers.

Brig.General Steward Stiles CO of the Army of Northern Virginia will be acting Eastern Theater CO while I’m gone

I did get the notice from “Friends of Gettysburg”, but I just could not fit it into my schedule. Maybe next year.

Just back from Gettysburg, Great time!, Excellent weather! Good Company!... and lots accomplished by the Friends of Gettysburg volunteers.

I was in the group to build Virginia worm fences on the southern edge of the the railroad cut, north of Reynolds Ave. (pic 1 and 2 were taken from the Reynolds Ave. bridge over the RR tracks) on post hole duty most of the morning...dug about 90 or more (lost count early on) 12 inch deep post holes to set the cross ties in.....and no, with all that digging I didn't find a single bullet or button.
It's hard to believe but about 14 volunteers built all the worm fence in this picture in just the 4 hours before we broke for lunch!

After lunch (supplied by Subway) our group spit up and I went to help on another section of fence that was being built north of the cut along Wadsworth Ave. This picture was taken just NW of where Reynolds Ave. runs into Wadsworth Ave. This new fence runs from that intersection along Wadsworth Ave. then a farm lane to the barn in the far distance.

Besides the the new fences erected the friends also painted fences on Emmetsburg road and Millerstown road in front of the Eisenhower farm and painted the Codori barn and out buildings along with several other maintenance projects.

I might try to be there next year. I do not think I will dig post holes, unless I have an AUGER!

Ernie,

I concluded that digging would be the less of two evils, after having done some stacking in the afternoon it's doubtful I could have stacked rails all day
