Just for fun...

Could Meade throw the fastball? We'll never know. But there's a lot of civil war generals who are in the Major Leagues.

In fact there are 220 current MLB players who have the same last names as Union generals in the ACW.

There are 161 current MLB players who have the same last names as Confederate generals in the ACW.

The top five MLB teams with players with famous ACW last names:

Team Union Generals CSA Generals Total

Oakland Athletics 10 12 22
Tampa Bay Rays 10 10 20
Chicago Cubs 7 12 19
LA Angels 9 10 19
NY Yankees 9 10 19

Some names had generals on both sides of the conflict. Eg Smith, Lee, Jackson, Johnson, etc. When a team has a player who counts for both sides it boosts their count considerably. This is the case with the Oakland Athletics:

Player Position Union CSA
Anderson  Brett SP x x
Cook   Ryan RP x x
Green   Grant SS x x
Hill   Steven C x x
Moore   Scott 1B/3B x x
Smith   Seth LF/RF x x
Taylor   Michael RF/LF x x
Thomas   Justin RP x x
Young   Chris CF/LF x x
Barton   Daric 1B x
Doolittle   Sean RP x
Griffin   A.J. SP x
Parker   Jarrod SP x

I know some of you Unionists out there are gloating you have more Union generals in the Major Leagues than the Confederates.

However, there were 634 unique last names of Union generals in the ACW and only 339 unique last names of Confederate generals.

On a percentage basis the representation in the Major leagues is 35% of Union generals eligible and 47% of Confederate generals.

So, sorry. [straightening jacket...lifting the chin...] The Confederate generals are America's team.

Random.

It would be interesting to pick out a starting lineup based on North vs. South Major Leaguers.

Off the top of my head (based on players born in Union or Rebel states)

Confederates:
Ty Cobb
Jackie Robinson
Willie Mays
Hank Aaron
Mel Ott
Ernie Banks
Frank Thomas
Ozzie Smith
Satchel Paige (Pitching)

Yankees:
Rickey Henderson
Pete Rose
Babe Ruth
Ken Griffey Jr.
Hank Greenberg
Lou Gehrig
George Brett
Reggie Jackson
Bob Feller (Pitching)

That's a game worth watching!

Let's break it down! The Rebs and Yanks have tremendous speed at the top of the lineups with Cobb and Henderson. The Rebs are heavily right-handed in power hitters but they will not strike out either. That should pose a challenge to the lefty Bob Feller. Great defense up the middle as well with both Robinson and Smith. The Yanks have a strong lefty lineup with Ruth, Gehrig, Griffey, and Jackson. They might crush the ball off of Satchel Paige who was a righty.

Great game... if only...

I am sure someone with my surname was famous but not sure if it really matters.

But then again I have the same surname as my father but my father's parents emigrated from Italy so theirs would not have been quite the same.

:D :?

Then again I seem to be following in my heritage and just like Italy - losing ;-)

Interesting team you put together but you'd have to wonder how many of the Confederate State players would have actually been able to play baseball if the Confederacy had won the war.
