Is there no end to the amusing Lincoln stories? Probably not.

Williams, Thomas Harry . Lincoln and His Generals (Vintage Civil War Library) (p. 11). Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.

Some of Lincoln’s appointments went to men who were leaders of important nationality groups like the German-Americans. Lincoln realized the importance of enlisting the Germans in support of the war, but he was amused by their eagerness to get their prominent men on the list of generals. Once a staff officer heard a conversation between the President and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton about some appointments of brigadier generals. Lincoln said he agreed with most of Stanton’s recommendations, but, continued the President, “there has got to be something done unquestionably in the interest of the Dutch, and to that end I want Schimmelfennig appointed.” Lincoln uttered the name with great enjoyment. Stanton said there were German officers who were better recommended. “No matter about that,” said Lincoln; “his name will make up for any difference there may be.” It had to be Schimmelfennig, and he went off repeating the name.
