It's about changing the code over so that users can then seamlessly receive a current update and future ones. Essentially it is converting a HPS version to the JTS version going forward.

You could always get the JTS update and apply it to the HPS version, but what it did was ask for a serial number (which an HPS user would not have). Unless a user had a valid serial number then this made the program unusable.

I can't imagine that the way Rich described for proving ownership of a title is not applicable every time a user has to undergo this process (unless he currently holds a record of ownership regarding that user as he described in detail elsewhere.). You'll have to do this because he'll need to get you a serial number for it. Unless a user has a serial number for a specific title then just applying an upgrade will never work -in the sense that whatever product that you upgrade is going to ask the user for the serial number.

Any way to just provide proof of ownership of HPS version and get the JTS version with new serial number rather than do updates?

Yes, email Rich a photo of your CD or email a copy of a receipt from HPS or another vendor, wherever you bought it..
