I didn't know a unit can rout, escape though the charging units of a melee and while fleeing behind enemy lines capture enemy officers. Are they also able to capture supply wagons while routing? So must remember to always have body guards with officers.

Hi,

I had an occasion where a routing unit in a Vicksburg scenario even captured my limbered artillery.

I thought they fixed all that with a patch a long time ago. I certainly haven't seen it since.

They shouldn't be able to retreat through enemy units.

How was the situation at all if they routed towards the enemy?

I am not certain; only a step-by-step run through of an actual situation would confirm it; but after inspecting the code, it does seem to me that, yes, routing units can capture enemy leaders and arty units. Supply wagon capture I am not sure.

Maybe this is not so nonsensical? Even fleeing units might have the good sense to capture a leader (and his small entourage), capture (or spike) an arty unit, and quite possibly also ransack supply wagons.

Would somebody please post here a save file just at the point where units might rout and do these things? Best of all if you could fashion a Petersburg situation, as that game (and several others) are now under active development.

That a routing unit captures leaders & supply sounds acceptable but that it can capture artillery doesn't make sense, at best if the artillery was limbered and so not ready for combat.
More worrying is that routing units not only ignore ZOCs but also enemy units. What is the sense of encircling a unit if it can simply rout out of the circle?
A rout should only go along empty hexes or hexes with leaders and/or supply.

I agree that routing deserves to be looked at more closely, and probably some changes made.

I can see situation where they shouldn't be able. Usually something like this occurs when the route path wanders behind enemy lines and hits leaders in the rear not stacked with friendly units. Most of these leaders are usually mounted and in reality would simply move out of the way. There capture is a result of it being a "game" with units not retreating toward their own lines and leaders not being able to respond to enemy movements except every 20 minutes.

If historically a regiment really found themselves routing toward the enemy instead of their own lines due to all retreat routes back being blocked, they might kill the officer in aimless desparation, surrender to the officer to save themselves, or more like the officer would just ride a few hundred yards away to the nearest friendlies and send them to capture the routed men.

All a little to complex for the game. Better handling would be for the officer to undergo a die roll for kill/capture and if passing displace to the nearest friendly unit. Wagons and artillery shouldn't be captured. Routed units wouldn't pay any attention to wagons and unmanned artillery.

No need for this. I will simply create one or more test scenarios with everything set up just so.

Where it is possible for a routing unit to capture a leader, it is not possible to capture a supply wagon, or artillery, excepting the artillery was unscrewed and abandoned. To capture a supply wagon or manned artillery, would require a melee. Routing units cannot melee. Now, if left behind enemy lines and they recover, then they can do whatever.
