Correct me if I am wrong but this is my basic understanding.

If a unit takes losses during its turn then the next movement phase it will take a morale check. If it fails the check it will rout. All determined by a roll of the mythical dice.

1) Does it matter at all if the unit takes just one casualty or one hundred? Is it still the same morale check?

2) Does a disrupted unit have an increased chance of a rout and failing a morale check?

Thanks for any help you offer.

Hi,

I'm out of town so don't have access to documentation which I think is in the Users Manual.

Whether or not a unit takes a morale check due to fire depends on a formula based on the number of casualties.

The more casualties, the higher percent chance of a morale check.

I think the formula is #casualties/#casualties+25, so if a unit suffered 25 casualties it would have 50% chance of a morale check.

I do believe a disrupted unit loses one level of morale for a morale check.

Note that any unit losing a melee on defense has an automatic morale check.

PS: I think all the morale checks actually precede the movement phase.

It does matter, there is a formula after which the game acts that results in this curve:
Image
The spot for a 50:50 chance to trigger a moral check is at 25 casualties.
Just to clarify:
- Fire casualties can result in a moral check if the test to trigger is failed. So higher fire casualties make a moral check to happen more likely but don't guarantee because the curve gets flatter and even with 500 casualties you only get a 95,24% chance to trigger a moral check.

- A melee guarantees a moral check.

These facts usually, at least in phased gameplay, result in the different way to play the two factions because usually:
- Confederate units are smaller but with a higher quality value
- Union units are larger but with a lower quality value

Yes as a disrupted unit losses 1 level of moral. AFAIk all the usual modifiers apply:
• If the unit is stacked with a Leader, then 1 is added to the Morale.
• If the unit is Low On Ammo or Out Of Ammo, then 1 is subtracted from the Morale.
• If it is a Night turn, then 2 is subtracted from the Morale.
• If the unit has Medium Fatigue, then 1 is subtracted from the Morale.
• If the unit has High Fatigue, then 2 is subtracted from the Morale.
• If the unit has been fired upon Enfilade, then 2 is subtracted from the Morale.
• If the unit is Disrupted, then 1 is subtracted from the Morale.
• If the unit is in a hex with units from other brigades, then 1 is subtracted from the Morale.
