Post subject:  Major Victory to Jim Pflueke

After 80+ turns in a 100-turn customized variant of "On to Cold Harbor" from Overland Campaign, my veterans of the Army of Northern Virginia were forced to grant U.S. Grant (Jim) a major victory. Although the score still reflected a minor victory, the Yankee forces had worn the ANV down to practically nothing in terms of infantry. The only thing holding the Yanks at bey was the rebel artillery. When the ammo ran out... well, the outcome was not in doubt.

Even though the Yanks won a major victory, this was not a one-sided fight. After the first day, the rebels actually held the advantage. Rather than stand and fight though, Lee ordered the army to withdraw and dig in around Old Cold Harbor to protect the vital crossroads. But despite a strong defensive position, the ANV could not beat back the two-pronged Yankee attack (can't dig trenches fast enough).

Also, this was an alternate version of the stock scenario -- I added victory points on the east side of the Chickahominy River crossings and increased the value of the crossroads to prevent the confederate player from simply falling back behind the river line and claiming a major victory for the south -- without fighting. The Yankee cavalry did manage to capture a lower bridge crossing but had not yet captured the cold harbor crossroads when the ammo ran out.

Hats off to Jim for a well-played and fun battle.
