An elderly gentleman with a long gray beard and wearing a faded Confederate general’s frock coat saunters into the Tavern, looks around, and gestures for attention.

“Ladies and gentlemen” he bellows, “and you Yanks, too – listen up! Years ago, I heard a rumor that the Confederacy was about to be recognized by unnamed ‘foreign powers’ and the war was soon to be over. I therefore slipped away to foreign lands to pursue fame and fortune in other venues. I have since learned my information was sadly mistaken and the Federals continue to invade our country, oppress our citizens, steal our chickens, etc., etc. I have therefore returned and offered my sword to General Ludwig, to once again take up arms against the oppressive Federal government.

“General Ludwig has kindly accepted my offer. Once I complete a brief refresher course at my alma mater – the esteemed Vicksburg Military Institute – I will come looking for some Yank to cross swords with.

You have been warned.”

The old codger turns to the barmaid and orders a sarsaparilla ‘with one of those fancy little umbrellas’, then slips into his familiar seat at a corner table.

Hi David:

What a welcome site to see you are returning to the Club. I trust you and Carol are well and having fun in Columbia, MO. Jeanie and I have moved basically back home and now live in Newark, DE, 15 minutes from our first home in Maryland. Here's a big Union salute sir and a welcome hand.

"DE DUBYA's BACK!"

Anytime a former member returns to the active ranks is cause for celebration, but for one so accomplished and well-respected it is a definite plus. Welcome back General (former Club President) Mallory!

I suppose this means that the war will now continue for at least another six or seven years.

Gentlemen,

I have successfully loaded the latest version of all ten 'Campaign' Civil War titles I own - haven't picked up Chancellorsville, Overland, or Petersburg yet - with quite a bit of hand-holding by General Hamilton, I might add. (Thanks, Rich!)

General Kunz gave me a personalized tour of VMI - nice to see they've installed hand-bars inside the latrines, for old-timers like me!

I believe I'm ready to once again strike terror into the hearts of Yanks everywhere - or at least to make them snicker a little when I enter the room.

I was just about to post a couple of challenges in the Opponent Finder forum, but I noticed two unanswered Yank challenges. I've sent replies to them (in their posts and via email). If I don't hear from both of them in the next few days (and I can understand why they might want to stay hidden, given my reputation! lol), I'll post a challenge or two of my own.

In the meantime, drink up. This round is on me. The next round ... will be on the winner of my battles (which may be me again ... *sigh*)
