I was listening to “The America Civil War a history podcast “ about Forrrest. During the episode they referred to the fact that a couple of Forrest’s cavalry companies were armed with Maynard breech loading carbines. I checked my HPS/JTS Shiloh and his unit is listed as having shotguns. Does anyone know if they were so armed?

Hi, General,

Here is everything you wanted to know about Maynard carbines (but were afraid to ask).

Indications in this article are that different companies were armed with different weapons, but I will check further.

Thanks General an excellent reference, states that the 3rd Tennessee were partly armed with Maynard Carbines. Looks like it would be an interesting carbine to shoot. Ah the smell of black powder :D

This is what happens when you go to slurping all the empty beer mugs in the tavern.

You either forget what you were going to say, like me, or repeat yourself!

I have not of late undertaken any mine sweeping operations in any of the local taverns, as for non local taverns I am not liberty to say. For those younger more impressionable officers (usually Union) please heed the warning "Do not drink and post" It is a dangerous combination and I for one do not endorse such behaviour  What is even more dangerous, (please do not try this at home) is drinking and e-bidding in an auction - that is how I ended up with another set of Bagpipes and an annoyed wife.
