Anyone know where I can find regimental rosters for the armies before the various battles?

I am trying to find the actual muster strengths of the regiments prior to or at least close to the time of the coming battles. I suspect I need to get this from the "Official Records" but I haven't found a searchable online version of the Official Records of the Rebellion.

It isn't hard to find the OOB's for the battles but actual estimates of the number of men in the regiments seems to be much more difficult to come by. Initially, I need a roster for the armies at Antietam since I am using that battle to test my system.

General Whitehead,

Have looked at http://www.civilwarhome.com.
It can be helpful, but you will have to dig and maybe not get all the info you need just some of it.

Hi,

I have "Regimental Strengths and Losses at Gettysburg" by Busey and Martin. Apparently they got the Confederate strengths from June 30th muster rolls and the Union June 30th strengths from the National Archives. I think this book is unique though. An awful lot of fascinating information.

I would recommend contacting Brett Schulte, who was an active member of this club and did a lot of regimental strength research for some of the HPS ACW campaigns. He has a web site at www.brettschulte.net/CWBlog/ . He probably has what you need or knows where you can get it, plus he will have a lot of experience of doing such research.

Priest's "Antietam The Soldiers' Battle" so far has the best muster list but it is a little spotty.

Schulte has a lot of info but still sorting through it. So far no muster roles but he may have them unpublished.

Still hoping to find a searchable version of the "Official Records". Had a cousin who had the entire set but had to sell them when he went broke.

You can get a copy of the "Official Records" on Amazon for about 10 bucks.

Unless you found something I didn't that is one volume of a 128 volume set. Which is why I am looking for some University or Library that has made an ebook version of it available online.
