Post subject:  War of Rights Game - Update and Observations

War of Rights has added three more skirmish area for a new location, South Mountain. One on holding Fox Gap and two on Turners Gap. They are still working on being able to man artillery pieces in the game. It will be interesting to see how they work that into a skirmish fight.

Now for some observations about Civil War combat as depicted in WoR. The game is a simulations of actual combat. How well it does that is open to question since the players don't really die so they do things soldiers wouldn't. But the simulation part appears to be very accurate. Particularly what a soldier can "see" and shoot at. And, there are some lessons to be learned from this.

First, firing at formed infantry at over 100 yards is pretty much a waste of powder. You can usually see them but you can rarely hit them. If there is significant vegetation that distance that you can actually make out a target drops dramatically. In woods it is closer to 100 feet. And, there is a world of difference between shooting at a stationary target and a moving target. Even if all the enemy is doing is marching toward you it throws off the chance of hitting considerably at distance over 100 yards.

When formed infantry line fires they pretty much are blind from the smoke they caused for some minutes unless there is a good wind blowing to clear the air.

Volley fire is really stupid. Especially if the other side has a stone wall or good fence. They count the intervals. When the other side volleys they stand up and fire at them while they reload then sit down so when the next volley comes there are no targets. Fire at will throws this off. Also, when a line fires a volley they are without loaded guns for the next 20 to 30 seconds depending on how fowl their guns are. A charging soldier can cover quite a bit of ground in that time without having to worry about being shot.

And, it is amazing how quickly in these WoR skirmish battles the players find fences, stone walls, trees, rocks, cannons, etc. to hide behind so they don't get killed while they are reloading.

Also, those stories in CW books about strings of soldiers all trying to hide behind the same tree are reenacted on just about every skirmish battle I have seen. Some large trees may get 6 to 10 people trying to use the left and right side of the tree while firing.

This screen shot will give you an idea of how difficult it is to even see a soldier much less shoot one. This is a shot from new South Mountain scenarios. I believe it was Garland's defense of Fox Gap.

There is a group of confederates charging but are partially hidden by the rocks right above the end of my bayonet. Further behind them is a fence line they were lined up behind and you may be able to see the flag there. I waited until they were as close as the small tree in front of my rifle before I shot one. They are probably at 100 yards.

Here's a short video someone put together from the game. It is very well done and it is difficult not to think you aren't watching reenactors rather than a game.
