Hurrah! July 4th Celebration The Union army in full joy following the surrender of the Confederate forces at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4th, 1863; following 47 days of siege. General Pemberton of the Confederate Army knew that he could get the most favorable terms from General Grant on the 4th of July. So he held his army together while giving other's time to escape to fight again. The surrender took place under a old oak tree with both men shaking hands at the end. The people of Vicksburg could not believe the news of the surrender until the Union Army hoisted the Union Banner from the courthouse. After 47 days of siege the Gibraltar of the South was no more and the South was cut in half.

I was not aware that Vicksburg had surrendered, maybe if I left the bar more often I might know these things.
