Gents I was reading the Memoirs of Lt Gen Early “Washington in View”. So far it has been a good read, if not a bit dry – the chapter on horse grooming was boring as. However, the chapters covering the attack on Washington have been most enlightening. I had not realised that Confederate troops had actually penetrated the city and had the White House in view, before they were turned back by a counter attack by a hastily cobbled together division of irregulars. The story goes that that impending end of the need for Washington lobbyist’s, inspired a sudden surge of patriotism and they charged. Anyone being charged by thousands of lobbyists would run and the Confederates were no exception. Yes, Gents lobbyists saved Washington – hard to believe, but true as I have been advised that it has also been on the History Channel.

Lobbyists would charge the devil with nothing but a pencil if they saw their money in danger.
