Gentlemen, I am looking to dip my toe into one of the JTS Civil War Campaigns for the first time. I own all of the Campaigns, except for Franklin, but would appreciate help in choosing which one to start with. Which campaigns are your favorite, and why? I’m especially interested in playing a campaign that offers at least some chance for the Confederate player to win.

To start, I’ve included some initial thoughts from a fellow club member below…

"The Gettysburg Campaign is the most even and lots of maneuvering room if you do not mind managing large armies. It is rather tedious, but the forces are very even. The battles however are huge and time consuming to manage. Gettysburg does allow either player can recover from a minor defeat. The forces are so large a minor defeat can be absorbed and the loser can turn things around. None of the other campaigns offer this option as the forces are too small.

The Atlanta Campaign does not seem to give the Rebs any chance at all. They simply don't have the numbers to absorb the casualties. The Rebs can only win if the Union player is totally incompetent.

The Chickamauga Campaign offers smaller armies, but little room for maneuver. Some of the battles are very one sided, like Perryville and Stones River. The Chickamauga campaign is somewhat weighted against the Reb player, but that is historically accurate. Except at Chickamauga the Rebel of Army of Tennessee was outnumbered in every battle it fought. It is the one of the more equal campaigns and the armies are much smaller and easier to manage.

The Chancellorsville Campaign offers few opportunities to change history much. You are basically just re-fighting the same historical battles.

The Vicksburg Campaign offers battles are that are historically accurate, heavily weighted in favor of the Union."

Many thanks for any thoughts/feedback you'd care to offer me and others who might be following this post.

Hi, Colonel,

I haven't played campaigns in a very long time, but I seem to remember Peninsula was pretty even.

You might try the Meeting Engagement Campaign contained within Campaign Antietam! Both sides have to be on their toes throughout!
