Having listened to numerous audio books, battlefield tours, and heard historians discuss this famed general I have yet to really understand how to pronounce his name. Maybe there is no right answer as all seemed to be used.

I have heard:
Rose-crans
Ros-ic-rans
Rosscrans

Joe Meyer might be the best to ask this question as he is writing a book about him and the Western Army. Joe?

From the research I've done the Rosecrans name is pronounced as the common name of the flower joined by a plural of the first part of the berry! The general, after he finished his public career, moved to the Los Angeles area , where today both Rosecrans Avenue, a major east-west thoroughfare, and Fort Rosecrans both enjoy that pronunciation.

William Lamer wrote the first and fairly accurate biography of Rosecrans, entitled The Edge of Glory: A Biography of General William S. Rosecrans, U.S.A,. I believe that he indicates that the Rosecrans name was shortened from the original Rosencrans in the family's early history. Most recently, Frank P. Varney has came out in 2013 with his treatment of the man, entitled, General Grant and the Rewriting of History: How the Destruction of General William S. Rosecrans Influenced Our Understanding or the Civil War.
