9. Leaders in the front line are in danger of being shot or captured. The advantage of having them there is increasing your odds of winning if that unit is subject to a melee. You don’t have much choice if your rear is insecure but assuming that your rear is secure enough that a leader can stand in a hex by himself, why would you move a division, corps, or army commander to the front line unless they are of such poor quality that you are hoping that they will be shot or captured.

I have found the benefit of having a leader in the stack is usually not enough to justify the risk of losing that leader. Unless it is a really lousy leader and the replacement is just as good or better. Also, remember when you lose your brigade leader there is no one to trigger your brigade to rally.
