34. Victory Points! When you first get casualties, check them out so that you know what infantry losses cost you, and cavalry, and artillery, and supply. Infantry normally counts the same from scenario to scenario, but cavalry and artillery values can vary wildly. When the BG games started, the cost for cavalry was bumped up to discourage their use as infantry and that practice was continued into the HPS/JTS games with some exceptions. Supply wagons/trains cost victory points in some scenarios and none in others so you just have to check because we aren’t told beforehand in the scenario descriptions (has recent updates made all supply wagons cost victory points?). Since artillery and cavalry usually cost so much, you need to be careful about controlling their losses because it can cause the game to get out of hand in a hurry. Artillery has been discussed fairly well previously, but cavalry use needs to be readdressed. Cavalry should be used primarily as a screen for the army (which means scouting, and delaying actions to buy your army time and/or distance), for mop up actions (filling the gaps for isolation eliminations, chasing down routed and heavily fatigued enemy units, etc), for excursions JEB Stuart style to flank the enemy because they can get in and out so quickly, and for fighting other cavalry. When you see me engage my opponent’s infantry with dismounted cavalry used as infantry, you know that I am desperate and have absolutely no other choice. It’s not because I like horses; it is because their loss costs too much in terms of victory points and mobility/scouting capabilities for the army.
