So trying to get back into these games after a long period off, I have a major question.

How do you go about scouting in these games when you aren't sure where the enemy is. IRL you would have cavalry way more spread out doing it for you and reporting back, in general. Even if you spread out the cavalry you do have you can't cover much ground at all it seems to me.

Looking for roughly how others handle it.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Unknown member rorris! <salute>

It would help all of us to know who you are? You need to set up your signature block! :D

To answer your question that is always the big point of any engagement is to find the enemy and there are a number of experts in the Club that thrive on evading detection.

Respectfully,

Your Obedient Servant,

General Nick Kunz
Commandant, VMI

Never bothered with scouting, I just blunder around the map and the enemy finds me, works every time.

Usually the scenarios are pretty straight-forward about starting locations and entry points. I start from there. Most opponents will take main roads from point A to point B (usually where my starting positions and entry points are) and so I can bet the farm we will meet somewhere on that main road. In a short scenario of 30 or fewer turns if my opponent wants to use a large number of turns taking obscure backroads and marching through woods and fields to possibly strike us from an unknown point than bully for them. Usually though you will get lucky and see them coming. It's hard to pull off a real good bonzai surprise attack in these games. In the larger scenarios you usually have enough time to scout more and to picket flanks and roads when necessary.

Everything depends on the victory conditions. Usually the onus is on one side or the other to seek contact. Sometimes both.

Two things that will help:

1) Seek control of good observation hexes, usually high ground.

2) Seek out objective hexes. Presumably these objectives will yield important points in a well-designed scenario and thereby attract your opponent.
