What commanders, and at what distance, can assist a unit in recovering from a rout? Some examples:

1. Can any Army or Corps Commander that is within one hex of a routed unit, assist them in recovering from a rout, or must they be in the chain of command of that routed unit?

2. Can the routed unit's Division Commander and/or Brigade Commander assist if they are stacked with the unit or within command/control range of the routed unit?

3. Does command/control of the command chain have anything to do with a routed unit's recovery?

What commanders, and at what distance, can assist a unit in recovering from a rout? Some examples:

1. Can any Army or Corps Commander that is within one hex of a routed unit, assist them in recovering from a rout, or must they be in the chain of command of that routed unit?

Manual: If it is a Day turn, then the Morale value may be affected by Corps and Army Leaders in adjacent hexes using the same process for Leaders in the same hex.

I read this to mean Corps and Army leaders in the routed unit's chain of command, but I could be wrong. Doesn't work at night.

2. Can the routed unit's Division Commander and/or Brigade Commander assist if they are stacked with the unit or within command/control range of the routed unit?

Manual: If the unit is stacked with a Leader of the same organization or a higher organization as the unit and if the Leadership rating of the Leader is higher than the Morale value, the Morale value is set equal to that rating. If the Leadership rating is already equal to the Morale value, then 1 is added to the Morale value.

The plain language seems to indicate that if you stack a leader with a leadership rating lower than the routed unit's morale it is wasted effort. Not sure what effect negative morale modifiers such as fatigue and night have on this.

3. Does command/control of the command chain have anything to do with a routed unit's recovery?

Manual doesn't indicate that it does.

Routed units can run in some strange directions, and for probably 15 years I have used corps commanders that were not in the routed units chain of command to assist in recovering them. My perception has always been that they did their job but the reality is that those units might have recovered on their own and not due to that corps commander being there. So far, I don't see any reason to change that habit. For example; if a routed unit runs behind a neighboring corps and that corps commander can get to them without losing command/control of their own units; or a corps is coming up but hasn't reached the front lines yet then I might run the corps commander ahead to assist with routed units. Would love to know though if my perception is true or false.

Yea if you can do so without causing problems in your C&C chain, move as many higher leaders to a routed unit as possible.

I have been instructed to place leaders at the top of the stack in order of command, but not really sure it matters. Does it?

I have the same habit but it is for my benefit in finding commanders. I would be shocked if it makes any difference to the game engine in what order our units/commanders are stacked. The only game benefit I see to the order of stacking anything is that your opponent only sees the top unit without clicking on the hex. That means that you could hide a unit that is in column below the top and maybe get away with it not being fired upon.

I also think that the prsition of leaders in a stack has NO bearing on their effectiveness nor vulnerability to fire. I believe placing leaders on TOP is only for players observation to easily find stacked leaders.
