WHERE THERE IS SMOKE, THERE IS A CAMPFIRE. Originally captioned as a photo taken on the day of the Battle of Antietam, and purporting to show artillery and infantry going into action amidst battle smoke, William A Frassanito laid out the truth in his Antietam: The Photographic Legacy of America's Bloodiest Day. The artillery is still limbered and the smoke is clearly from idle soldiers' campfires. The photo was recorded by Alexander Gardner's crew on now-private land a few hundred yards SE of the Pry House... I got to sit where the photo assistant sat just once[,] more than 25 years ago. As to [its dating], it is likely among the first shots taken by Gardner at Antietam -- likely on Sept. 18 or 19[, 1862].

This one is a classic and was covered in our Battlefield Photographer journal in August 2019.

One can't help but wish photography was about 25 more years advanced during the Civil War. The photos we would have would be surreal.

Very cool! Despite going to Antietam a lot, I've only been to the Pry House once, a long time ago. Will have to go back some day.

I do like the perception warp the photos make though. :D
