Does anyone know if any ACW games (JT in particular) cover the battle of Ball's Bluff: if so, which one? |

Gentlemen, Sirs! <salute> Well I just did a web search and much to my surprise this is what I found: https://legion-wargames2.mybigcommerce.com/balls-bluff-ziplock/ There are a couple more pics to view of the counters and map. Brig. Gen. Neal Carney, sir! <salute> Neal, After reviewing the battle this should fall under the Antietam Campaign series. Currently I don't find it in the HPS or JTS series but would be able to create the scenario for you. If you would like to have the scenario created, please let me know. I've located the OOB data and map and should be able to create it with no major hiccups. |

Antietam Campaign is certainly the logical choice! Btw - I've been to the battlefield site, it's one of those on the secondary circuit worth visiting.

Gen. Hampel Sir, I would be delighted to have BB as a scenario (I see Gen. Kunz agrees). If you don't mind, please do so!!! (I agree that Antietam is the logical title for this scenario). May I also inquire as to where you located the Order of Battle. Those that I have found do not list numbers of troops--'course I did not do a thorough search. |

From various reports and books it should be possible to arrive at relatively accurate numbers. The best account I have read on the battle was in The Maps of First Bull Run by Bradley M. Gottfried as it also shows actual positions (and gives the timing of unit placements) in detailed maps [a great resource as are others in the 'Maps of ...' series by Gottfried]. Don't rely too much on the Official Records as some reports in it about Ball's Bluff are wildly inaccurate such as this one: "General Orders, \ Hdqrs. Army of the Potomac, No. 32. J Washington, October 25,1861. The major-general commanding the Army of the Potomac desires to offer his thanks, and to express his admiration of their conduct, to the officers and men of the detachments of the Fifteenth and Twentieth Massachusetts, First California, and Tammany Regiments, the First U. S. Artillery, and Rhode Island Battery, engaged in the affair of Monday last near Harrison’s Island. The gallantry and discipline there displayed deserved a more fortunate result; but situated as these troops were—cut off alike from retreat and re-enforcements, and attacked by an overwhelming force, 5,000 against 1,700—it was not possible that the issue could have been successful. Under happier auspices such devotion will insure victory. The general commanding feels increased confidence in General Stone’s division, and is sure that when they next meet the enemy they will fully retrieve this check, for which they are not accountable. By command of Major-General McClellan: S. WILLIAMS, Assistant Adjutant- General." Actual strength of the two forces were about equal with each side having about 1700 men although the Union also had a few artillery pieces on the field (a James 14 pdr rifled cannon with the 1st California and two 12 pdr mountain howitzers with 20th Mass. plus others across the river). |
