Was just going to see everyones opinion this:
I've come across this reference at least three times now in my Civil War studies.
I always assumed that Bernard Bee's statement, "There stands Jackson like a stone wall!" was a positive statement, made to rally fleeing Confederates.
At least three authors I've read has hinted at the fact that Bernard Bee's statement was made in frustration, that he was criticizing Jackson for not advancing his men to come to Bee's aid.
After I read it once, I just thought it was an interesting idea. Second author I read that made that statement kind of made me sit up and take notice.
I just finished Hymns Of The Republic and...again...it was mentioned.
Thoughts?

I think it's been something that's been around here & there for a while now, but is coming up more. Unfortunately we'll never know the full truth, but certainly makes for good use in both the for & against Jackson sides of his legacy.

The rest of the quote was reportedly "Rally around the Virginians!" Sounds to me like the reference was positive, since Bee felt his own brigade needed to rally.

Agree with Mike. The full quote was certainly positive as Gen Bee was trying to get his men to stop fleeing before the Union onslaught and Rally. The first time I stumbled across Gen Bee's quote being theorized as "negative" was quite recently. Always struck me as an attempt to run down Jackson's legacy via revisionist history...

My 2 cents

Yes. I agree with all of you, sirs.
As General Mihalik already pointed out, and General Seidl, the last part was, "Rally behind the Virginian's!"
I guess that could be construed as saying that the Virginians were not coming to their aid and therefore they had to rally behind them, but everyone who has studied the battle knows that Jackson was using the defense of Henry Hill to his advantage. If he would have advanced to his aid, he would have lost his defensive advantage.
It was a recent shock to me as well when I read it. Never had heard that theory before.
