This could be from any war:

[During a storm at sea...] The captain of the transport studied his clinometer and, with a dispassion that terrified every landlubber in earshot, mused, "I can't believe a ship can roll so far without turning over."

Somewhere in the Club is a sailor laughing to himself.

Wow, heard similar thoughts from sailors I know. I can't fathom myself but it's incredible.

Did the quote come from someone in particular?

Ran across it in Rick Atkinson's "An Army at Dawn". Attributed to a sailor as the second wave of transports and ships tried to navigate the storms off the Moroccan coast in 1942.

Cool! Have an old friend of mine I'm gonna share this with and I know he'll appreciate the source. :)

Thanks!

Conversely I have heard a Navy sailor ask what the handholds on the bridge of a ship were for. Apparently he had never seen them on Navy ships. I would have thought even a modern aircraft carrier or submarine has them but I have not had the chance to confirm. So maybe he was just a Navy guy being Navy.
