I was randomly looking at a picture of Lee's death mask and the first thought that came to mind was, "That doesn't look all that much like Martin Sheen."

Thank you, Gettysburg, for forever etching Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee in my brain

I can associate with 'random browsing' although how you came across this 'boggles me' tbh . Thank you nonetheless for sharing this undoubtedly 'different' & unique snippet :o

Ahh, but it gets more complex.

In Gods and Generals Robert Duvall was Lee.

Stephen Lang was Pickett in Gettysburg but Jackson in Gods and Generals [G&G]. [Billy Campbell was Pickett in G&G.]
Longstreet is played by different actors as well as a number of others.

Jeff Daniels plays Chamberlain in both but he is clearly older in the first part of the war (G&G) than he is later (Gettysburg).

One more: Robert C. Byrd was a serving US Senator for West Virginia when he appeared as a Confederate General in G&G (something I'm sure would cause a lot of hullabaloo should a current serving Senator appear as a Confederate in a movie).

Yeah, Stephen Lang now represents both Pickett and Jackson in my brain.

Lloyd Bridges is Jefferson Davis (North and South TV series)
Raymond Massey is Abe Lincoln (Abe Lincoln in Illinois and How the West Was Won)

Yes, I know Daniel Day Lewis played Lincoln more recently, but he is already engrained in my head as Bill the Butcher from Gangs of New York.

Please don't forget Henry Fonda as "Young Mr. Lincoln". There is a delightful scene where he cross examines Ward Bond who onscreen plays a character named JD Cass. Lincoln asks his real first name and gets the reply John. Lincoln then tells him that he will refer to him as Jack . And thereafter Jack Cass has a hard time with the truth.

Or in Last of the Mohicans, though Gangs of New York fits the ACW motif.

Also Stephen Lang's quick follow up as Ike Clanton in Tombstone.
