I know that Talonsoft produced both UK and NA versions of their games, but I don't understand the difference. Would a UK PAL disk be playable here? Is it just the video component? or are there other differences that make it useless?

I have a chance to get a UK game, but don't want to just acquire a silver beer coaster. Anyone know if it would be playable on NA machines?

Thanks

Brig Gen Mike Kaulbars,

I aquired a copy of the elusive Chickamauga ($2.50)in one of those British triple packs by Explosive. The hardest thing I ran into was loading the game. I had to go into the disk in the talonsoft folder and load it from there. It seems to run fine, played the AI with no problems, but I have not tested it out on the ACWGC field of battle yet (play-by-email).

Joe

Thanks. I understand BGC was finicky no matter what version you got, so this is heartening news. Want to send me a move and I'll tell you if it loads? [:D]

Does anyone else know if there is any important difference?

Several of the early Talonsoft games I bought (and not just ACW) were American Versions and not UK - I assume my supplier had some deal going. These have always worked here in the UK without any problem, so I assume the reverse would be true. To be honest, the only problem I ever had was knowing which version I had when it came to update time, with two versions available!

Same here. I am using both UK and US versions of the BG games. I don't think there is any technical difference, reckon it's just marketing reasons.

Same here, I have a mixture of UK and US versions and they all work fine. I also sent a spare Chickamauga disc to someone in Canada and he is using it without problems (I hope!)

Gentlemen

Thank you one and all, your input has been most helpful .

Mind you this begs the question "If there is no difference, why are they different?" [?]

I would guess the diffence between The US and UK versions has to do with the agreement reached for distribution, such as mention of the UK publisher, or UK credits or something similar. Could be copy protection or how it checks for the disk, too.

I've purchased all the CM games from SI in England and they work just fine here. The only problem I've seen is 'u's get stuck in certain words where they don't belong. [:D]

As with others, I use a mixture of US and UK versions. There was discussion of this on the old TS board, but I don't remember what they said! The only thing to remember is to make sure you apply the correct patch to each game (US or UK version)!
