Kicking around my neck of the woods, are you, Bill?

Jekyl is a beautiful place. Jacksonville International Airport is just over an hour south, and Savannah is even closer, but their airport is much smaller.

The next island south of Jekyl is Cumberland, at one point a mission / fort for the Spanish that is now a national wildlife refuge and only accessible by boat, but it absolutely beautiful and features a good number of wild horses that run around the island. They are amazing to watch on the beaches and dunes. Lots of other wildlife as well. This is also home to Kings Bay Naval Base, home of much of the US Atlantic Submarine fleet - you can see them coming in and out of the inlet. Another amazing sight. The town where you catch boats tot that island is St. Marys, GA, a town that has been around since before the Civil War and still has many of the old mansions in tact and some are open to the public. (Beautiful golf course along the river, btw... Osprey Cove...)

The next island south of that takes you across the St. Mary's river into Florida, and onto Amelia Island. Here you have Fernandina, another CW era town and home to Fort Clinch, a very well preserved CW era fort that was occupied by both sides during the War and often has an outstanding group of reenactors present to give tours - all of whom live and speak as though it were 1864. They are a hoot!

Then of course, Savannah is obviously a great place to visit just north of Jekyl Island, full of history, and Charleston isn't that far away either.

And as for hurricanes? The area from St. Augustine north through Jacksonville and up to Savannah is actually the "safest" part of the Southern coast. We've had fewer major hurricanes hit this area than any other stretch of coastline of the past 100 years or so. The bend to the west along the coast here tends to keep us out of the main line of fire and the 'canes get sucked north by the Gulf Stream or go further south where more of Florida sticks out around Cape Canaveral.

But I digress...

God bless <><
