American Civil War Game Club (ACWGC)

Gentlemen,

My family and I are moving to Virginia, a place I've never lived. In fact we've not lived in the states since '89 and think we're in for a healthy dose of culture shock. The job site is in Chantilly and I'll need to live within reasonable commuting distance. Does anyone have any advice?

It has been a while since I was up there but Chantilly is far enough out to be considered on the fringes of the Washington suburbs. Generally home price increase as you move east of it and decrease as you move west. And, in easy driving distance of Bull Run Battlefield.[:D]

I live very near Chantilly. Kennon is right about housing. The farther West you go, the less congestion you will find. But to be honest, the entire area is growing so much that there is no way to avoid the wretching traffic.

I thought Rich Hamilton lives in Richmond? If so he is not a NOVAite.[:D]

I used to live in the village of Middleburg, 12 miles west of Chantilly, until last October. Where you live is going to largly a function of your house budget.......and be prepared for the prices.

Also, don't think of "commuting distance" think in terms of "commuting time". Often on 66 it takes an hour to go 10 miles.

BTW, there's a great game store in Chantilly "The Game Parlor" on Metrotech Drive. Spent a lot of time boardgaming in there.

I can't believe they have a street named Metrotech. I use to drive to Chantilly from Herndon because they had the only Boweling Alley in the area.

Chuck, you said the your job site was in Chantilly so you shouldn't have much of a commute problem. It's all those poor souls trying to get to Washington area that are cursed.[:D] It is more of a decision whether to trade driving time for better prices and more open land to the west or not.

You drove too far. There is a Bowl America on Dranesville Road. [8D]

You must have been away from NOVA for a while now. Traffic is hell no matter where you live.

Man - you can say that again! Guys coming down for Tiller Con got stuck in 3 hour traffic jams just to pass around the beltway. Every time I have been near traffic has been pretty heavy. I'd say the further you can live out the better, so that your time at home isn't spent dealing with all the crowds...

Hey Rich,

I avoided the traffic jams at Tiller Con by STAYING in downtown Richmond. Everyone was coming in as I left and leaving when I came in. [:D] Mechanicsville road was a nice 4 lane street all the way. Not a whole lot of traffic though there was a school zone that was pretty crowded on Friday. Of course going home (to the hotel)from the game playing at 1:00 am might have had something to do with avoiding the crowds too.

Looking forward to 2007.

Yes Ken. Metrotech is the name. Strange I know. It's in the shopping center where Loews and KMart is. But the name is really no stranger then, for example something like "Fox Gen Estates" where there are no foxes, no glen and at 1/10 acre lots, certainly no estates....Ah marketing.

I've bowled at the alley in Chantilly a few times. Nice place.

I'm one of those guys got stuck in that DC traffic. Coming down from Pa Thursday I figured I'd just beat the rush hour, boy was I wrong. Hit Rockville, Maryland around 3 PM and didn't reach Quantico till 6 PM, that's about 50 miles for those of you not familar with the area. Used to slowdowns and heavy traffic at rush hour in Pittsburgh but a five lane highway coming to a dead stop was something new to me. I was stationed in Quantico in the 70's and took 95 home and back once a month or so, things weren't that bad then, traffic was heavy and sometimes slow but it did move. I don't think they could pay me enough to do that everyday. On the way home I took the long way, west on 64 then north on 81 to 70, longer distance but an hour shorter timewise.
