Gentlemen,

I've been playing around with the HPS Gettysburg engine and tried to identify when a limbered gun is lost when meleeing with mounted cav. I'm getting instances where I've caused 40-50 casualties to these limbered units and still not caused loss to the artillery unit - just fatigue. The men lost from the arty crews don't even show up as infantry on the victory conditions.

Remembering that each gun has a crew of eight, shouldn't the entire crew be sitting on the ground around their newly abandoned field piece whimpering rather than withdrawing with fatigue? After all I've just caused about two to three incapacitating wounds on each of them.

Any thoughts?

Arty in HPS Getty? Well, they are weakened by division, then their mobility is decreased because there are so darn many of them (come on, how many of you have tried to be mobile with the Union Army while not trying to lose the game with the Artillery reserve at the same time?) and yet they do stand up well to melees[?]

I believe the number for determining a gun loss due to melee with a limbered battery is 25. Unfortunately, they don't carry this loss over from melee to melee so a melee that gets a kill result of 1-24 does no permanent damage to the guns. A melee that causes 25-49 kills should cause the loss of one gun. And, 50-74 will cause two guns to be loss, etc.

It's one of the problems in HPS. Artillery limbers is very difficult to kill, artillery unlimbered is to easy, and crews seem to be to vulnerable to rifle fire.
