Gentlemen,
Col. Meuleveld of the AoC and I were discussing the drawbacks of fixed units, and I came up with an idea that might make their use more palatable: What if the 'unfixing' rules were just made more lenient?
I think a fixed unit becomes unfixed if it's fired on by an opponent or if an opponent's unit comes within 5 hexes and within the line-of-sight of the fixed unit. In addition to this, though, I'd like to see morale checks made for un-fixing, just like recovering from disruption. Of course, officers should be able to add their modifiers to this roll attempt.
With this change, even if an opponent had some inkling -- or even a fairly good idea -- of where frozen units started, he would be taking a very big chance trying to go after them. They might still be there, or they might not -- and they might be laying a trap!
I also think the best place for using fixed units is in campaign scenarios with multiple options for the same map, so the opponent would have no way of knowing exactly where the fixed units were or when they would be releasing.
Just some food for thought. (We've had several ideas presented in this forum. Is someone compiling these thoughts for presentation to John Tiller next Spring?)
Your humble servant,
Gen 'Dee Dubya' Mallory
