This is great stuff...I can't wait until the movie....

Actually, this early termoil and the incredible isolation of washington at this time would be a great thriller!

" Fourteen locomotives from Martinsburg were disassembled and moved across country by horse drawn teams to Strasburg, Virginia. Eventually the locomotives were moved to Richmond where they were put to use by the Confederacy."

Quite a feat Jackson pulled off moving those loco's! 8)

I just hope Ned can hold out. I can't wait to see how it ends.

This started 4 December 2010 and with some help, I've made it 6.5 months so far. I forgot to do it a couple of days (senior moments that will probably occur more often before this is finished, and they got done the next morning anyway), I went on vacation and Cam McOmish stepped in and did it for me while I was gone, and had 7 days without electricity/internet thanks to a very agitated Mother Nature which had to be caught up once internet came back, but other than that I've enjoyed it more than any of you have.

I have encountered a problem or two while doing it. I find that everybody doesn't agree on when or if a certain event happened, in which case I use the date of my main source. However, sometimes I may not notice that I've already posted an event as having happened when I repeat someone else saying that it happened on a later date. I also like to see some of the more personal aspects of the Presidencies and most known Generals, like what did Abe and Jeff do day in and day out. I have an excellent source for Abe and none so far for Jeff. Some of the personal aspect has been interesting with Abe and Mrs Abe's personal trips plus doing some things that would probably get a President impeached nowadays.

I'm trying to keep it concise for those who want to spend a couple of minutes a day finding out what happened 150 years ago in the American Civil War while including links for further study by those who want to go deeper. Some days I fail in that goal, but tune back in tomorrow anyway.

And Drex, my wife says about the same thing every time that I come down ill ("I just hope Ned can hold out. I can't wait to see how it ends."). Too much insurance!

As I read more and more of this history and what I've read elsewhere, my respect for Winfield Scott has increased manyfold. He impresses me as a strategic thinker beyond his time. I'm glad he was with us in Mexico.

I agree. Scott's plan got mislabeled but the basics of the plan was what eventually won the war.

Here Lincoln uses the word "Insurrection" yet I believe the Government referred to the conflict as a "Rebellion", hence Rebels instead of 'Insurrects". :)

Thanks for keeping us up to date on a day by day basis General Simms. Always an interesting read.

I never realized the extent of the Naval actions during the blockade. It seems like, during the initial year of the war, that there was an engagement every day, almost. Some in support of troops, but most of blockade runners.

I have subscribed to this thread but haven't been notified lately. Anyone else out there experiencing the same thing? Of course, its always advisable to visit the MDT on a daily basis anyway but the subscription should still work.

So, was Lincoln a Mormon or contemplating converting to Mormonism?
