We are considering posting aar on a battle we are about to start, what is the guideline on how long to wait before posting action so as to not divulge info to opponent, yet keep up to date?

I can't speak for certain, but for many other games AARs are often posted after the game has been completed. Screenshots can be taken throughout and text written while the game is going on, but they're not posted until after the game has been completed.

Other times, both sides create their own AARs and simply agree not to look at their opponent's until the battle has ended.

Yes, please. More AARs! As a hotseat solitaire (only) player, I'm curious to observe in detail how PBEM games play out.

As I understand it, if you post your AAR in Pinkerton's Tent, your Confederate opponents would not have access to it.
