American Civil War Game Club (ACWGC)

The post about the Civil War blogs provided some great sources for material about the civil war. I was wandering about opinions on civil war documentaries. Anyone have something to recommend other than Ken Burns The Civil War? I'm wanting to expand my video "library" and was looking for some good titles.

I saw a serie called "The Divided Union" on TV. I find it interesting at the time and if I'm right, it was produced before the Ken Burn's serie.

In 1993 the Smithsonian Institute put out a taped series entitled <i>Smithsonian's Great Battles of the Civil War</i> in 7 volumes. The separate volumes ran from 60 to 90 minutes and were sprinkled with the services of a number of hollywood stars who read the parts of Lincoln, Grant, Davis, Lee, Frederick Douglass, Sherman, McClellan, Gordon, John Brown, Farragut, Joseph E. Johnston, Shgeridan and Clara Barton. There are also appearances of noted Civil War authors and historians, James McPherson and Ed Bearss. It was an expansive undertaking and is crammed packed with information...almost too much information, as I found some volumes to be more than what I could enjoyably and reasonably ingest in one sitting (although that may be a reflection of my own, decaying attention span...one considerably enfeebled by all of the games I am now playing in this club)! As a documentary it is very rich in content, having access to all of the Smithsonians collections as visual treats. But I found that it suffers occasionally with lacklustre and dry narrative passages. It was produced, written and directed by Jay Wertz.

Sir, that is what has come to be known as the Missouri Battle Flag. It was carried by several units in the Civil War. You can find it fairly easily with a google search. If you have a problem finding one you like, let me know and I'll email you a copy.

I personally do not care a whole lot for the Ken Burns series, but I do like the History Channel's Civil War Journal.

The battles of the west were not detailed very well. The largest charge on US soil was the battle of Franklin. 2007 emmy award winning documentary "five hours in the valley of Death" battle of Franklin by wide awake films. They also did The battle of stones river "the fight for Murfreesboro". Additionally there is the battle of Chickamauga from video ideas productions,www.videoideas.com. I got this one at the Chickamauga battle field park, and they sell the previous 2 also.

Amazon should have them also.
