... is this normal? I am playing the Colonial side in a maneuver, and it seems impossible to hurt the British with fire. Not only that the damned militia never fire back when fired upon. Even if I fire them in my own phase, they almost never score a hit. In my desperation, I have begun to advance to point blank range and fire regimental stacks - eight companies, 200 men! - at a time, and I can't inflict anything but fatigue!! This is not a singularly incident - this has been going on for 15 or 20 turns now! The casualty stats show 209 killed Colonials and 15 British KIA. This is ridiculous - I could as well throw marbles at the redcoats.
Now this is not my first fight. I know how to handle troops, and I know how to inflict casualties. If I fire 200 men into an adjacent hex, I know that between 5 and 10 men in this hex should drop dead. These troops are not fatigued. They are not E quality, but C and B. They are not even all militia, but a good deal of them are regulars. I have led the Colonials at Camden and scored a major victory - I know even milita can dish out if handled properly. But in this Germantown maneuver it seems impossible. Help - has anyone ever experienced anything like that? Is there any idea as to the causes for this failure? Any input appreciated.

Hummm...not sure what is going on Dierk. I have scored a major victory on that field as the Colonials...I'll be glad to look at the files if you wish, but nothing comes to mind.

Sgt Walters, please have your men LOAD their weapons, they will be much more effective, then.

Dierk,
I fought one time at this battlefield vs the Colonials and I can say you ... they hurt me a lot
Maybe Ernie are right and you should give your men the ammunition they need.

I'm Sgt. Walter's opponent in the Germantown manoeuvre and the very light British casualties seem to be principally due to my deployment of most of my men so far engaged(light infantry and German jaegers)in extended line - this formation has proved (at least in this game) perhaps unrealistically effective at reducing my casualties. In contrast, when Sgt. Walter recently fired upon some regulars deployed in ordinary line at maximum range (4 hexes) he inflicted 3 casualties with a single volley. If this game is typical in the effect that "extended line" has on reducing casualties, perhaps there is a need to reassess the impact of this formation on fire combat?

Rich, while I agree in general, that can't just account for everything. I am currently using light troops in extended line in several battles, and they ARE taking casualties, fewer, but not dramatically fewer than troops in line. Unless your Germantown lights are much lighter than my Bunker Hill or Rhode Island lights, this can't be the whole answer.

Dierk - It's not just your D and E grade colonial rabble who are having trouble hitting men in extended order - in my last turn that I've just completed a volley from 188 grade B rifle-armed German Jaegers has just failed to do any damage (even fatigue) against some of your militia (now that they're in extended order)

As a further thought - perhaps green-clad Jaegers in extended line ought to be harder to hit than redcoats?

Does not sound like the way most of my Germantown games have gone. In fact I have been impressed with their fire ... especially in the later stages.

I had a similar experience in my recent battle at Germantown(mod). My Militia trying to assault the bridge on the British Left were completely worthless. I was able to get Fatigue on the British but don't think I ever got one casualty. This shooting was across the river bt still. I finally gave up on that assault altogether.
