I am in a few campaigns in 1812. Is there a patch or something so the ADF will not use up all my artillery ammo before the game ends?

Under the A/I menu, you can set ADF for arty to short, med and long range. You can also restrict infanrty ADF.

BTW Has anyone figured out yet how it is determined how much arty ammo supply is effectively used up with ADF? I have been watching one of my guns at Brandywine fire on a Rebel column marching along the far bank of the river 30 or 40 times in one turn. However, the ammo supply was reduced by 1 round only once in a while, sometimes six shots got off without a change in the supply level, and sometimes 3 or 4 shots in a row reduced it by 1. Is it a random chance?

You have to select the ADF option to be able to use it, however.

Ernie - you say it's possible to restrict infantry ADF - should there perhaps be some generally accepted club rule (or preferably patch) restricting rifle ADF?

Recently I emailed HPS suggesting that rifles shouldn't be able to fire as frequently as muskets - historically, half the rate of fire would be perhaps over generous.

If rifles had been capable of such rapid fire why would the Colonials have bothered to issue their regular forces with muskets rather than rifles?

Reducing the frequency of rifle fire would also improve gameplay, as currently riflemen are WAY too powerful and can blast away repeatedly (of course from 9 hexes) at approaching enemy as if they had ACW Spencer repeaters!

How about a patch reducing the % probability of rifle ADF to 1/2 that of muskets - with a maximum of ONCE per turn for rifles and three time per turn for muskets? (Or perhaps even 4 times per turn for A class British / German musketeers?)

Recently John reduced the triggering events for ADF in his Napoleonic series, so a unit will firle only once at a company changing formation for example. I understand he will introduce this to our engine sometime in the future no date given.

The use of the ADF is a choice vs Manual play. Each player may use the A/I menu to have short, medium or long range fire. It is only INFANTRY fire not rifle or musket.

In answer to Dierk: ADF fire does NOT reduce ammo supply on a 1 to 1 basis. Sometimes the ammo supply does get reduced in ADF, bu tI don't know how that is calculated.

Ernie,

No, I think you are wrong. If you select manual play you go to the old system.

If you do not select ADF you do not get the choice on the pull down tab. try it and see

Correct. Your FIRST choice is Manual Def Fire or Auto Def fire. In ADF, you have the choice to set ranges for that fire.

You have 3 options when it comes to the Defensive fire option.

1) Check the Manual Defensive Fire (MDF) box an not the Automatic Defensive Fire (ADF) box. This will put you into a 4 phase per turn mode. Meaning you will move, then the other side will do their defensive fire, then it will be your offensive fire and melee phase. If playing by e-mail this will require you to save and e-mail the file to your opponent at the end of your movement phase, and then again at the end of your melee phase. Requiring 3 files to be transfered to complete 1 of your turns.

2) Check the MDF box AND the ADF box. This will also put you into a 4 phase per turn mode, but the difference here is, the computer will handle your opponents defensive fire when playing a PBEM game. So
this method only requires 1 file transfer to complete your turn.

3) Uncheck the MDF box and check the ADF box. This is the default setting which allows opportunity fire to occur during your turn, and all actions take place during a single phase.

(Sorry for the wording, this was a cut and paste from one of my replies on the HPS site).

...and remember the game default is the new one phase game. So if you do not check the Manual or the ADF, you will play the one-step phase game and NOT be able to set your ranges for your troops.

If you want to be able to select the range for your troops you must check ADF box.
