I just got the game a few days ago and would appreciate your input. Playing against the AI, do you find it best to play the 1st move side like in West Front or Rising Sun? There is no suggestion as to what side the player should take. Also I am trying to adjust to the move fire mode. Several times I have tried to move while in the fire mode. If my own units are in the hex when I make this mistake, will I fire on them? Thank you for you answers

Frank,

First off, Welcome! I have never found that it matters which side you play first...can't really think of a reason why it would except for some scenarios allow the first moving player to cause some damage on the other player before they react. But most of these scenarios start with the opposing sides far enough apart that it doesn't matter.

And, no need to adjust to the move, def fire, then offensive fire and melee style of play. Go to the HPS web site and download the latest patch (1.03) and you will be brought up to the latest version of the engine which allows single phase play. Their web site is at http://www.hpssims.com

Frank,

You can fire on your own troops, major reason my boys aren't fighting well for me. They're still mad about tne or twelve occurences of fracticide during my first game <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Fortunately, you can't melee against your own people.

If you like 1776, you'll love 1812!

Al, I found out. I make the mistake of forgetting to unclick the offensive fire button and trying to move. If I click onto a space already occupied by my own troops they fire. I am going to have to do all move moves before before doing any firing. Here is a question. If I have fixed units and I fire on my own fixed units will they become unfixed and ready to use?

Frank,

Nope, that trick won't work.

As far as firing, you can move, and then if you want to fire a specific unit, but aren't ready to fire a whole series of units, just press the "Ctrl" key, which will toggle the fire mode. YOu can then fire that one unit, release the key, and continue your movements.
