The old cotton trader pulled his team and cart up to the South Carolina crossroads and came upon a youth, looking splendid in a green uniform. A horse was tied up to a nearby tree, and the youth was sitting on a rock, drawing with his cavalry sabre what appeared to be a map and movements of troops in the dirt.
