Hi Chaps A great book worth a look is called: 'The General ship of Alexander the great' by MjG JFC Fuller - none other than one of the inventors of tank warfare and the attack by paralysation. Both of which form the basis of modern air land doctrine. Fuller is in my view very brilliant and this book often references Napoleon's method and gives you insight into the truly professional military operational mind that this quite outstanding author had. It is more interpretive than scholarly. In a nutshell Fuller applying his extensive military know-how studies Alexander from that perspective. Which I think make's it a very definitive piece of work. He also wrote the decisive battles of the western world and there impacts upon history. A must have for the military historian interested in geo-strategic issues. Salute! |

I have not read that, but to me the best example of explaining operational warfare (as it is understood in the modern sense)--its components, goals, and how it ties in to strategy and tactics, is "The German 1918 Offensives: A Case Study in The Operational Level of War" by David Zabecki, a former US Army officer (if I remember correctly, he was high up in NATO for a while). He looks at the German campaigns as bad operational form and explains why, although the first few "operations" where successful on a scale not seen since the opening battles of the war, they were not "operational" in the modern sense of the word because they did not tie in to strategy and were not part of a larger plan. I am hoping that Ed will make a game of 1918 sooner or later.. |
