Ok - lets here it. Who has the oldest PC in the Club? This PC is your MAIN PC you use to play the John Tiller (Battleground or HPS) Nap series on.

In this poll the YOUNGEST PC listed is 2001. The OLDEST is 1994 (which frankly I do not know how any Windows OS that meets the bare minimums of our software could run on that old of a system).

So here goes! Take the poll and then if your system fits any of these dates please RESPOND and let us know the graphics card you are using.

Again this has to be your MAIN PC - not one you use as a backup system.

(this poll will end at 30 days - thread will become a normal thread at that time too)

What? This is one poll I am very curious to see how many qualify to answer. If you still have one of those mid-90's machines running, wow, are you also still using 56K dial-up to get email and access the internet?

I used to have an old Packard Bell that was my main PC when I joined the club, but that has long since fallen by the wayside. Now, my biggest complaint is that my current machine has trouble with the Win16 subsystem when running my old Talonsoft games.

I still sometimes game & design on my PC from 2003 I think it is? Ethernet card is shot, so I connect to internet on my laptop I got last year.

A new NIC is not expensive, Scott. Also would allow you to have LAN games at the house ... Jeff and I will be by tomorrow at 2pm ...

Yeah it was a pin prong issue, trying to find the right one to fit the card setup. It is probably better off being offline anyway.... :P

(sound of doorbell)

"Hi Scott, got the PCs up and running? Oh Boris is here again (that's Al Amos). Hi Boris! What's kickin'?"

"Come on in Bill, Jeff. You are letting the snow blow in!"

(we come inside)

"Hey, nice Christmas tree. Got yours up kind of early didn't you?"

"Just hoping to put something under it for myself soon!"

"Oh, what would that be? Something for your PC?"

"Yes, well anyway, here are the PCs. Boris (that's Al) and I thought that you and Jeff would team up against us (as we feel that you NEED someone really good to help you out) in a game of Waterloo. Does that sound ok?"

"Sure, as long as Jeff gets to handle the French Guard. You know I just love to launch them on Turn 1 with band playing."

"Yeah, well you and Jeff figure that out. Boris has a new strategy for the Anglo-Allies he wants to try out. Me, well my Prussian hordes will just be looking to roll over your right flank like always."

(Scott and Boris huddle up)

"So Jeff, what is your plan?"

"Wipe em out by turn 20, just like I always do!"

(sound of door bell)

"I'll get it," calls Boris.

(in comes Colin Knox with luggage)

"Hi gang. What have we here? Peters up for another "dusting" (not sure if that is of NZ origin or a NASCAR redneck term)?"

"Yes, we hoped you would stop in. Sort of heckle Jeff during the game and cause him to make mistakes."

"Not on your life, Scott. We French stick together like glue!"

(more huddling by the Allied team - Jeff and I making our move on the PCs)

"Ok, shopkeepers," calls out Jeff, "its your turn."

It is now time for Boris to move Wellington's army. Jeff runs out to the kitchen to get some snacks, Scott takes a nap as his Prussians do not enter for some time.

Cut to turn 20. Scott wakes up and rejoins the game.

"Boris, what have you done?"

"I tried out a new strategy, never yet tried before in our club."

"What do you call this new strategy?"

"The Tulsa Turnaround!"

(Wellington's army has exited the board leaving the Prussians to fight the French army)

"I have my work cut out for me," says the worried Prussian Feldmarschel.

"You have more than your work cut out for you," chimes in Colin. "Blucher is probably going to spend the rest of the summer in Paris."

"Boris, hey Boris! Get back in here. You get to command the 3rd Prussian Corps."

"Who me? I am on strike. They are threatening to close my post house in Siberia and there is no way I am putting up with that crap!"

(Out walks Boris)

Scott turns to Bill and Jeff, hands them his sword and says, "Anyone for a good game of Gin Rummy?

I guess I should have kept that old machine a little longer. :D I canabolized my 1997 P2 Compaq that was running Win'98 a couple months ago. I do still have an Atari 800XL that I bought in 1984 in the attic and every once in a while I drag it out to play a couple of the old simultaneous move I plot/you plot/we go games I have for it.

Yeah, way to go Ken! Atari 800 was my first computer. I used to play the East Front game they had for it. That and an armor game of which I cannot remember the title.

Bill,
have you posted this elsewhere? It seems when ever a black powder game comes out by Tiller, people at the wargamer.com will ask about any new graphics, then take a pass. I am posing the question that there is a balance between current players with old machines and potential players with new ones, and I think it may lean towards the latter....

Ernie - tossed out my PC that was from the 1990s. Case got burned by electrical fire in house in Calif. during remodeling. It was a 866 Mhz Pentium IV. Nice PC for its time the old boy was just no longer able to load quickly and so on. Have had two PCs since. Keep the one from 2005 as a backup. My "screamer" is a AMD Quadcore 8GB RAM with tons of disk space (3 internal drives). I would like to upgrade my video card eventually but am not in a huge hurry.

Jim - no, I have not posted this anywhere else. Was just curious. Email me about this and I will give you more info.

I have a Northgate keyboard (several in fact). At least one of them was purchased in 1988 or 1989 when I bought my first system (don't remember if it was a 286 or 386).

The one at work has a messed-up page-down key, from taking out my frustrations on it.
There is a place that refurbishes them and sells old ones (they are that good, really!) This one is still in perfect shape beyond a little grunge buildup.

This computer was purchased in late 2006 and still runs Windows 2000 although I just received a new system with Windows 7 installed.. It's still in the box, I know I will have to replace this one eventually but bought one now so I could get internet installed at my new place w/o having to move this computer unnecessarily (I haaaaate moving but it is inevitable at this point, but I don't know when. Soon-ish.).

Northgate keyboards! Oh man, brings back memory of older Compaq systems we had at work.

Worst case I ever worked on in IT job: we had special cases for systems that were what we called "refrigerator cases." They had a door that had a special locking system in the front. The back plate came off with tons of screws.

The metal inside was razor sharp. Cut hands was not out of the ordinary. I gave a howl of delight when I heard we could dump the systems. They had wheels too! No, they did not make ice cubes.

I also disliked working on the Mac IIci systems. Really anything Mac/Apple. To this day I will not use a Mac. Still too expensive ...

Oh hey Scott, I've got gin!
