I cannot answer that off the top of my head, Colonel Dumas, but from a purely Hanoverian perspective, I would say it was a great shame that they failed in the endeavor.

Better no notable officers and win in the end then notable officers and end up in exile or against a wall.

OK, Cliff, these would be my four choices to achieve the maximum, positive effect in 1805 for the Coalition cause: Napoleon, Davout, Lannes, and Murat.

OK, I admit it, I don't know the answer to your question. I am also fairly sure that I do not even own the proper book to perform the research for your question. Be that as it may, there is a very practical reason why we really should not recount the votes in the last election. That reason........is Scott Ludwig. There were 54 total votes cast during the election. That is really 34 more votes than Scott is comfortable with counting (actually 44 more votes if Scott happens to have his shoes on at the time). The poor man has already undergone immense trauma in correctly counting the votes the first time. He did, in fact, have to "borrow" four other people (who were wearing shoes) to get the 34 extra fingers he needed to complete his tally.

I say have a heart, Colonel Dumas, our poor Public Relations Officer has been traumatized enough already without calling for a recount.

Lets get this back on topic please. Cliff - you are the host of this thread. Do your best to please avoid getting it adrift.

I know that in 1809 Lannes almost came to blows with another Marechal. I cannot answer this one and am very interested in finding out the answer.

Enquiring minds want to know! (pun on The Enquirer)

One of the funniest (but saddest) books I ever read was called "The War Between the Generals" concerning the Western Allied generals of WW2 and how they could fight like cats and dogs (and it was not always British vs. American of course).

Napoleon was at fault for some of it - he goaded them into fighting at times - I believe it has been called a form of behavior that he engaged in as he may have felt insecure about his position. He paired them off against each other. Really a shame. Sort of shows how insecure he was. Of course with the past record of France and executions I sort of can understand it!

Give us a deadline on this contest - I will try and get some info on it out of Bowden's book on the campaign.

1805? Hmmm.... I know Lannes challenged Soult to a duel and wasn't terribly fond of Murat either.

As far as the 4th, I'll guess Bernadotte.

It took the top player and I believe he is guessing to get on track, now to make it more interesting at what battles did this happen. Now the hook for what reasons were they going to dual? I know there's a Nap historian out there!
My next question will be about 1800 ! :P

Soult convinced Lannes to speak for the corps commanders and question Napoleon's strategy at Austerlitz. Then when faced with the empereur's angry response, he proceeded to pledge that the IV corps would gladly perform its part. Lannes was outraged.

And an American at that! Where are the French? This should be a question they can answer right away.

Sort of like "which two ACW generals had a quarrel in 1862 causing the more senior to have the other arrested."
